Not just any weekend, but a Vampire weekend!

And what a monster of a start to the weekend it was, (I am still in recovery now as it was quite a day!). Having only heard Vampire Weekend on CD I thought i had an idea about the way they would sound live however on peeking my head in for sound check i realised that this sound was a lot bigger than the CD suggested and that is the beauty of seeing and act live! There were loud and lively drums, a bouncing bass line to rival the most sub heavy of ska nights! And soaring vocals and synths across the top!It was GREAT!

It was a real pleasure to have the whole crew and band in the building and they seemed excited to be starting off the tour in our venue.

The beauty of working and being at the De La Warr is the atmosphere on the show day, and general public can witness that too, its like the auditorium is murmuring and humming all day as a mere pre cursor to the explosiveness of the evening! And then the magic comes, 6:30pm doors open and in pours the public, and it was great to see so many new faces in the crowed looking around at the auditorium as if they didn't know this place existed before Vampire Weekend. It was a joy to see, even more of a joy was hearing Ezra cry "How you doing Bexhill?" To which there was a massive roar, and i thought good for you Bexhill you be as loud as you like, this definitely no longer the quiet venue of years passed, we are making a noise and will continue to do so!

"Other"

Coming up this season, we also have out new night "Other" thus named as it seeks to showcase the best of the new that is unclassified with regards to genre! We've all been there when someone asks you to define a sound and the difficult response of "Well.....its a little bit folk, a little bit jazz, with a hint of metal and opera..." that does sound like a frightening genre to behold but none the less "Other" seems to fit with us. The idea of the other option or the other alternative, so coming up on this bill we have the Mecury winning Speech Debelle, The Invisible and Micachu and the Shapes, all of whom excel both in and out of their genres. Speech's combination of beats and poetry, the big beats and soulful sounds of the invisible and the audio treats of Micachu. The night itself is a true mash up of different styles, and quite and unlikely trio to grace the same stage in any "Other" (pardon the pun) format. One thing they all have in common is a distinct sound, and a inventive use of their instruments, be that Speeches vocal, The Invisbles beats and breaks and Micachus mix of zither, drum machine, bottles and acoustic instruments in the mix!

We hardly know where to begin, ended last year in a bit of a flurry getting the new onsale so we are ready to run with it in for the new year, and what a year it is going to be, for those of you who have missed out on Vampire weekend tickets sign up to our mailing list or become a member to hear about these things first i can assure you that it will be well worth it for the year we have ahead.

Well running into this year with our arms flailing meant that there was no chance for us to do our end of year review, of which albums and artists we liked the best, so in the spirit of looking forward as opposed to back we have been having a think in the office about who is up to interesting things this year....

I'd say keep and eye out for the following:

• King Charles
• Japandroids
• Delphic

there's also lots of albums coming out this year to look forward too, for Arcade Fire. the elusive Beastie Boys album (maybe that will become like the Zach De La Rocha/DJ shadow album that is always floating around however we did finally get the guns and roses album last year!! Weather we liked it or not)...anyway i digress, pavilion favourite Goldfrapp has a new album out in Marc, LCD Soundsystem, Foals(if they dont sack another producer), Sufjan Stevens and the Gorillaz to name a few.

Right more to follow as resolution number one this year is to keep this blog updated!!!

Vampire Weekend!!!!!

Very excited and pleased to have the Brooklyn boys coming over to Bexhill, maybe we could have some kind of cultural exchange, or twin town from Bexhill to Brooklyn as there is so much great music coming out of that area! Following on from the sucesses of last season its going to be great launching into the new year with a full auditorium, which lets face it is a preference at the moment if purely to keep the cold at bay.

We also have the amazing Bat for Lashes following after, who is doing a one off UK date with us before commencing on a south american tour supporting coldplay!
Along with our new night "Other" that will see three of the UK's hottest and most interesting musical acts take to the stage in the form of Micahu and the shapes (Jewelry being a favourite in the DLWP's poll for album of the year) Mecury winnner Speech Debelle, and The invisble!!!

What we did last Saturday!

It's now Tuesday and i am still smiling like a cheshire cat after the events of Saturday, I have seen a lot of live music this year A LOT and The Heritage Orchestra with Beardyman and DJ Switch blew me away. It started out with Prokofiev's Concerto for turntables which the orchestra and DJ Switch executed with real force, and really set the tone for the evening to come. Switches scratching was impeccable as the orchestra lead the audience through the different movements of the piece, it was a interesting to see the structure within the orchestra and the decks were enveloped and embraced as a notated player.

We then moved onto the second half which was a collaboration initiated at the pavilion between Beardyman and the Orchestra. Battling the cello at first Beardyman called out with his cello and the orchestra played back, it was a gentle start after the Concerto and it took a while for the crowed to settle as i dont think anyone was expecting what played out over the next hour and a half. It became a battle of beats, strings, percussion woodwind and brass and as the improvised set built up, broke out and ran away with itself , it left the mass of people in the stalls jumping and screaming for more, this was not your average night at the Orchestra, on top of the different genres that played out, including drum n bass, dubstep, disco there were moments of beautiful melodies from the orchestra minus the big beats, overlayed with Beardymans amazing vocal, this guy is so much more than a beatboxer.

. The visuals provided by Bartosz for the evening provided the perfect back drop for the Orchestra as the images jarred and punctuated notes and rhythms following flawlessly with the ever-changing sounds playing out on stage. Looking at the back drop it was as if the improvised set was being written out visually buy the images behind.

If you weren't there it's hard to describe or comprehend the little bit of magic that took off and marked the start of the Heritage Orchestra's residency with the De La Warr, however on Sunday a flurry of you tube clips went up so have a look for yourself. I'm so excited to see what happens next, never have i seen an orchestra and players so full of life, every person on that stage was having fun and just as excited to see where the next five minutes would take them as were the 1000 in the crowed.

Thanks to everyone who came along and gave this a chance and supported this new venture, I have no doubt that you enjoyed it as there was no one in there who wanted it to end! Make sure you keep your eyes fixed to the website for what is happening next!!
